Personal Trainer Body Language: The Hidden Language of Success

As a personal trainer you are constantly trying to decode other people’s nonverbal cues.  While you’re busy trying to decode their messages, they are also trying to decode yours.  There are times when you want other people to know exactly how you’re feeling, especially when those feelings are both positive and reciprocated. This isn’t always easy to do, especially if you’re not a particularly emotive type of person. At other times, however, you definitely want to hide your inner feelings. To avoid emotional leakage and you may have to work doubly hard.

Jonathan Goodman, 2011 “Think of your body language, posture and appearance and the 7 seconds you have to make an impression.  Think of how fast your existing clients can pick up on your lack of sleep or an illness that’s creeping in!  Even existing clients, superiors and colleagues continuously judge you on your appearance (Cash, 1990).  Do you look competent, trustworthy, caring, and confident or is your visual message keeping you from reaching your goals? Remember that your appearance is not vanity, it shows others how you care for yourself, value yourself and hence them.  Thourlby’s research (1978) indicates that appearance as a first impression can impact on choosing your services more than actual competency!”

In order to really understand body language you must spend a bit of time studying it. To get you started check out the following videos:

Amy Cuddy: Your body language shapes who you are

Body language affects how others see us, but it may also change how we see ourselves. Social psychologist Amy Cuddy shows how “power posing” — standing in a posture of confidence, even when we don’t feel confident — can affect testosterone and cortisol levels in the brain, and might even have an impact on our chances for success.

Anthony Robbins: The Power of Rapport

Rapport building is the most important skill in learning how to connect with people. The better your connection with people, the more success you will experience in your personal training business and your life.
